An Alpine Tradition: Boiled Wool
Crafted in the heart of the Tyrolean mountains, our boiled merino wool combines time-honored alpine tradition with modern functional performance.
Built to withstand the elements, this warming material starts with ethically sourced mulesing-free merino sheep’s wool, undergoes precise weaving and fulling, and is meticulously finished with an open-seam construction. The result is a naturally weather-resistant garment shaped for comfort, durability, and timeless utility.
Merino Wool: A Premium Foundation
Exceptional outerwear starts at the source. We exclusively select fine, mulesing-free merino sheep’s wool, raised with respect for animal welfare and the land. Unlike coarser traditional wools, merino fibers possess an ultra-fine diameter, giving the fabric an exceptionally soft feel directly against the skin without sacrificing strength.
The base fiber dictates the performance of the final garment. Merino wool naturally possesses complex protein structures that regulate body temperature, wick away moisture, and inhibit odors. By committing to the highest grade raw materials, we ensure that every property, from natural warmth to breathable comfort, remains intact throughout every stage of production.
Knitted: Flexibility Through Structure
Boiled wool starts as a knitted fabric.
The initial knitting stage builds an invisible framework of natural elasticity into the boiled wool. The knit gives boiled wool its fluid, responsive property - stretching naturally to movement while continually holding its shape. Our boiled wool garments are thus well suited to meet the demands of any outdoor activity.
Fulling: The Alpine Walking Technique
The transformation into true boiled wool takes place in the Tyrolean mountains through fulling - a traditional alpine 'walking' technique. The knitted wool is immersed in water, subjected to heat, and rhythmically agitated. This controlled mechanical pressure causes the microscopic scales of the merino fibers to open, interlock, and shrink.
Through this intensive fulling process, the fabric loses up to half of its original surface area, becoming a dense, tightly matted structure. This density gives boiled wool its weatherproofing and thermal regulation properties.
Weatherproofing: The densely felted fibers create a natural barrier against alpine winds and moisture, allowing rain to bead off the surface.
Thermal Regulation: Billions of tiny air pockets become trapped within the matted structure, creating an insulating barrier that locks in warmth while allowing internal vapor to escape.
The Open-Seam Overlay: Tailoring Precision
Constructing a garment from dense, fulled wool requires an elevated level of tailoring mastery. Traditional folded seams create rigidity that distort the silhouette. At Frauenschuh, our boiled wool garments are crafted with the specialized open-seam, overlay technique.
Each panel is cut with exact precision. The pattern pieces are then laid flat, overlapped, and stitched together with meticulous accuracy. This clean, flat-seam construction gives the garment its elegant drape and friction-free layering comfort.
